Magnesium plays a key role in human health, it is involved in over 350 enzymatic functions. One of those is controlling the synapses in the brain. When stress comes (mental or biological such as infections or toxins) then glutamate is created. This fires into the synapse causing major problems. Glutamate in the brain causes anxiety and other neurological conditions such as OCD, migraines, seizures etc. Magnesium prevents glutamate from entering the synapse thus calming the mind.
GABA is the opposite of Glutamate, GABA calms the mind. Benzodiazepines control anxiety by modifying the GABA receptor in the brain.
Glutamate can come from outside sources (processed foods) but glutamate is produced by the immune system.
