One of the big issues with chronic infections is the impaired detoxification that occurs.   Different mechanisms are at work such as impaired methylation, hormonal/endocrine changes and damage to the cell membrane.   Damage occurs as a result of oxidation, the oxidation is directly caused by immune system activation in which strong oxides are dispatched by immune cells.   These oxides are meant to destroy the cell membrane by lysing, however the oxides damage healthy cells.  

Dr. Majid Ali has described this action in his book The Canary and Chronic Fatigue in which he calls it 'leaky cell'.   He observed that CFS patients have damaged cell membranes and that many cellular processes are damaged thus causing the chronic fatigue.   Electron transfer was one of those.   Dr. Kane submits the idea that fats are necessary to repair the cell membrane since they are comprised of fatty acids, she includes phosphaditylcholine with other essential fatty acids.

Of course there are other things that can reduce free radical damage including antioxidants (vitamin E, vitamin C etc) and the antioxidants produced by our own body including superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione. 
  
Anyhow I found this snippet from Freedom from Disease by Hari Sharma, M.D.   
 -as a side note he is a strong advocate of Ayurvedic principles and discusses the value of panchakarma which is a multiple pronged therapy designed to help in the detoxification.  In this article he talks about the dangers of lipid peroxidation which means that the fats have become oxidized.

He says:
"In theory, panchakarma should reduce lipid peroxide levels.  One aspect of panchakarma involves ingestion of clarified butter (known as ghee in Vedic tradition) as well as sesame oil... Ghee is a good source of the type of fatty molecules needed to create cell membranes.  Sesame oil is a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and contains potent free radical scavengers.  If cell membranes contain damaged molecules (lipid peroxides and their degenerated descendants), then an influx of ghee and sesame oil could provide intact molecules to replace them"
